Our Key Focus Areas

1. Climate action

Mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to climate change impacts, and promoting resilience in vulnerable communities and ecosystems. We cover multiple positions in climate change adaptation and mitigation, sustainable and green development, carbon reduction and transition, circular economy, ecotourism, and other related fields. We evaluate background information; assess climate risk such as in water resources, agriculture, and forestry setting; and incorporate solutions to mitigate such risks in natural resources management practices and urban development. In sustainable and green development, we explore, regional and global green and sustainable development trend; explore international best practices such as in taxonomy, ESG, and information disclosure; and propose project solutions. Where necessary we work with other stakeholders to identify leading edge carbon transition technologies in renewable energy, energy efficiency, recycling, and/or ecotourism to meaningfully contribute to efforts geared toward addressing climate change. Outputs include climate change assessment and other technical inputs, operational and knowledge products, and/or institutional capacity development.

4. Biodiversity Conservation

Protecting and restoring ecosystems, conserving biodiversity, and promoting sustainable management of natural resources.  We evaluate the environmental soundness and sustainability of projects, and facilitate the integration of environmental considerations into the project decision-making process. We undertake environmental assessment and support project environmental planning and management, consultation and participation process, grievance redress, and monitoring and reporting process. We identify project environmental impact and benefits, e.g. those based on the project feasibility studies, and prepare environmental impact assessment or initial environment examination (IEE) and/or environmental management plan (EMP). We also review existing assessments and provide any adjustments as needed. We provide technical backstopping/support the development of environmental, social and governance (ESG) framework, technical inputs, knowledge products, and institutional capacity development.

2. Social Equity

In social equity, SFI aims to address disparities and promote inclusive development by providing expert guidance and strategic interventions. These services encompass a range of activities, including assessing social inequalities, identifying barriers to access, and designing solutions for equitable resource distribution. We work closely with clients to develop tailored approaches that consider diverse needs and perspectives, fostering environments where all individuals have equal opportunities for success.

3. Monitoring and Evaluation
5. Natural Resources & Water

Review masterplans for project areas and develop sector analysis in line with international best practice:

  • Explore point and non-point source pollution situation and propose interventions.
  • Review the project design for water quality and flow monitoring and hydraulic modelling, for example.
  • Provide recommendations for ecological restoration in the project designs.

In ecology, forest, and forest ecology related fields:

  • Assess the wetland functional and biodiversity values of the project sites and river sections.
  • Assess potential project impacts to wetland biodiversity and river function.
  • Provide solutions on designing artificial wetlands and selecting bio-engineering measures for erosion control, among many others.

In hydrology,

  • Conduct hydrology assessment in project areas with respect to catchment and watershed analysis, flow estimation, rainfall or runoff modelling, spatial development, land-use change, and climate change impact.
  • Collect required hydrological and socio- economic data, and conduct drought risk mapping.
  • Liaise closely with stakeholders and identify feasible interventions, among others.
